In January, we visited one of our portfolio companies, North End Teleservices, to see how it is making an impact in its community. In this second installment of our two-part series, you’ll hear about what it’s like to work at North End.

Walking through the halls of North End Teleservices, it becomes abundantly clear just how impactful the company is in the lives of its employees. The business offers jobs to those with only a high school degree or equivalent, which makes them highly accessible to a wide range of people. Additionally, each employee is offered training that gives them the opportunity to not only excel in the role they were hired for, but also obtain skills that will help them grow in their career and have the opportunity to move up the ladder. And for those that want to take their skills even further, the company offers tuition reimbursement programs.

These jobs create a ripple effect through the community. North End Teleservices generates $200,000 annually for every job it creates. This represents a tremendous impact on the community. The company is located in a strip mall on the Northeast side of Omaha, an area that has historically seen its fair share of blight, and still suffers from problems associated with high unemployment rates. The need for good, quality jobs in the area is high, and Carmen has her sights set on creating lasting change in her community by offering more than just employment, but a true opportunity to enrich peoples’ lives.

In communities like North Omaha, the barriers to employment can go beyond just having access to a job. Oftentimes, people lack access to transportation to get them to and from their job every day. But Carmen has thought of that as well. Every morning, two vans named “Pride” and “Joy” leave the parking lot to offer rides to work to those who need it, and again back home at the end of the day. They have even been known to make pit stops for people needing to pick up groceries for their families.

Rides to work aren’t the only benefits North End Teleservices offers. The company also offers apprenticeship programs, tuition assistance and reimbursement, and training and advancement opportunities to help build the workforce and empower them with greater career mobility.

Carmen and her team at North End Teleservices are truly creating more than just a place people want to work. They are creating a community of people whose lives are enriched by their place of work. The North End story is a testament to what can happen when a business provides more than just a wage, but an opportunity for people to thrive.
