Some of the issues that we as a society need to solve require a lens adjustment, says Sandra M. Moore, our chief impact officer, on a recent Real Leaders podcast.

Earlier this month, Sandy joined Real Leaders to discuss the risk of short-sided leadership, the importance of your leadership lens and the gains of investing with a long-term perspective.  She explained that one of the biggest challenges is wage growth and wage progression balanced against sustainability and profitability of businesses.

Advantage Capital’s mission is to invest in businesses that are ready to grow in distressed communities and willing to create opportunities for employees to increase their own wealth.

That idea has firmly taken hold. In the podcast, Sandy explains that many of the small businesses in our portfolio are growing their own businesses, while increasing wages and providing benefits – such as health insurance, training, wealth creation opportunities—that define a “quality” job.  She discusses the firm’s bi-annual survey of portfolio companies that gathers this information, analyzes it, and then provides insights back to portfolio companies on their own impact and how it compares to the industry.

“When you give business owners the information through a lens that shows the effect of a wage decision, for example, on people and communities, they can and do make the right decision.”

Sandy’s podcast follows the release of Real Leaders’ 2021 list of the Top 150 Impact Companies.  Advantage Capital was recognized as a top impact company for the third year in a row for its work in investing in growth-oriented businesses to grow jobs and equalize opportunity in distressed communities.
